Ground Breaking Ceremony of the Southeast New Territories (SENT) Landfill Gas Processing Facilities

The ground breaking ceremony for the Southeast New Territories (SENT) Landfill Gas Processing Facilities was held on 15 July 2015. Mr Joe Zorn, Country Director of Veolia Hong Kong, Mr Robert Peterson, General Manager of Green Valley Landfill, Limited (GVL), Mr Philip Siu, Chief Operation Officer – New Energy Business of Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (HKCG), and a representative of the Environmental Protection Department of Hong Kong were there to officiate the ceremony.

The Processing Facilities, a collaboration scheme of GVL and HKCG, is Hong Kong’s first grid-connected landfill gas processing facilities which is expected to be commissioned in mid-2016. Upon completion, the facilities will export treated surplus landfill gas to the off-take station at Tseng Lan Shue for injection into the HKCG supply grid, providing an alternate source of energy from waste to benefit the public of Hong Kong.

This project will result in an annual reduction of about 56,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (equivalent to the quantity of carbon dioxide removed by 2.4 million trees in one year) generated from consumption of conventional fuel source.

The facilities will provide landfill gas to the grid for an agreement period of 20 years up to 2036.
