Mars turns its wastewater into clean energy

Veolia is working with Mars to reduce its water and carbon footprints.

THE WORLD'S LARGEST CHOCOLATE FACTORY

The Mars plant in Veghel is the world's largest chocolate factory, producing Mars, Snickers, Milky Way, Bounty and Twix chocolate bars for the European market. As part of its campaign to reduce the use of fossil fuels and mitigate its impact on the environment, Mars chose to implement an outstanding wastewater treatment and recovery facility at the Veghel plant.

A FIRST FOR EUROPE

Veolia's solution involved building and operating a wastewater treatment facility equipped with patented Memthane technology, which can turn 98% of organic pollution into a source of clean energy (biogas), cutting the Veghel plant’s energy bill by 10%.

Wastewater treatment plants in the food & beverage industry are the biorefineries of the future.
